Interior and exterior staining share a name and almost nothing else. Inside, the job is about color and a topcoat that survives daily life. Outside, the job is about protecting wood from a Texas sun that bleaches and breaks down boards fast.
We will be straight about the outdoor side: stain is not forever here. A deck in full Fort Worth sun usually needs a fresh coat every one to three years. The good news is stain fades instead of peeling, so a new coat is a clean job, not a strip-and-start-over.
On exterior wood, you are choosing how much grain you want to see against how much protection you get. Transparent and semi-transparent stains show the wood and are the easiest to refresh. Solid stains give the most UV protection and last the longest, but they cover the grain like paint. For most Fort Worth decks, a quality semi-transparent stain is the sweet spot. We will tell you which makes sense for your wood.

How often does a deck need to be re-stained in Fort Worth?
Usually every one to three years in our sun. The boards that take the most afternoon sun and foot traffic go first, and a semi-transparent stain needs it sooner than a solid one. The upside is that stain fades instead of peeling, so a recoat is a clean job rather than a strip-and-start-over.
Should I stain or paint my deck?
For a deck, stain is usually the better call. It soaks into the wood, fades gradually instead of peeling, and lets you recoat without stripping. Paint films on top of the boards and can crack and peel once moisture gets under it. We will look at your wood and give you an honest answer.
What is the difference between transparent, semi-transparent, and solid stain?
Transparent shows the most wood grain and protects the least. Semi-transparent shows the grain while soaking in and resisting peeling - the sweet spot for most decks. Solid gives the most UV protection and lasts the longest, but it hides the grain like paint.
Can you stain my interior stairs and railing darker?
Yes - it is one of our most-requested interior jobs. We strip the old finish so the new color takes evenly, stain the treads, risers, handrails, and balusters, and seal it all with a hard topcoat. We can stage the work so you can still use the stairs while we go.
How long does interior wood staining take, and can I use the stairs?
Most staircases run a few days, depending on size and how many coats. Where we can, we finish every other tread at a time so you are not locked out, and the topcoat gets time to cure before heavy use.
Do you stain new decks and fences?
Yes, but new pressure-treated lumber has to dry out first - often a few months - or the stain will not absorb. We test the wood before we start to make sure it is ready to take the stain properly.
